In autumn 2025, Hartela completed the new Astra campus for Åbo Akademi University in Turku's old town, next to the cathedral. The campus was built on top of the lower floors of the old Gadolinia campus. Built between 1967 and 1969 for teaching natural sciences, Gadolinia reached the end of its life and was completely demolished, except for the lobby, café, and basement facilities. The new campus serves as a meeting place for students and staff and, in addition to teaching facilities, it offers restaurant and library services, among other things. The aim of the project was to create the best possible facilities for learning and teaching, while taking into account the environmental impact of the building.

Over 300 meters of custom-made channel drains

The stormwater drainage of the roofs, terrace, and courtyard levels of the Astra campus was implemented entirely with DryLine® channel drains and other Peltitarvike drainage products. The campus has many different roof levels, one of which is a large green roof area. A completely unique channel drain solution was custom-made for the challenging structure of the green roof, taking into account the installation issues, fastening solutions, and overall functionality of the site. The green roof channel drains are connected to inverted structure drains, which have also been used individually in different parts of the roof with a site-specific screen structure that collects surface water from the green roof.

The drainage of the campus's impressive rooftop terrace was also implemented using DryLine® channel drains. Made entirely of stainless steel, including the gratings, the channel drains are designed to run discreetly around the terrace. The stylish channel drain system blends in perfectly with the refined, modern look of the rooftop terrace, while providing a durable and reliable solution for draining surface water from the terrace.

DryLine® channel drains with gratings made of stainless steel and ductile iron have also been installed in various yard areas on the campus. For example, shorter channel drains and inverted structure drains with screen structures have been used for stormwater drainage in the green courtyard. A total of over 300 meters of channel drains were delivered to the site, with the shortest channel measuring 40 centimeters and the longest 140 meters. Thanks to our flexible production, we are able to meet both the smallest and the most impressive channel drainage needs, if necessary with a solution that is perfectly tailored to the unique structure of the site.

Special solutions from the design stage to the site

Granlund Oy was responsible for the HVAC design of the Astra campus. The challenging special features of the roof and yard structures required more customization of the products than usual. Traditional solutions were not suitable everywhere, so effective cooperation between the designer and Peltitarvike's technical support was essential. Easy access to our experts and their solution-oriented approach streamlined the collaboration and helped Granlund designer Topias Leivo find special solutions for channel drainage that were suitable for the structures and their purpose.

These solutions would not have been possible without technical support and guidance. Peltitarvike has special knowledge of its products and professional technical support, which are vital in complementing the designer's ideas about implementation and suitability. It is important to be able to consider drainage solutions for different special structures and the most challenging locations at the design stage, so that no additional costs are created on site in terms of increased installation costs or extra time. I believe that technical support helped us to anticipate many of the challenges that this challenging project presented.
