Rainwater drainage system tailored for a demanding site

Eteläranta 10, a prestigious building in the centre of Helsinki, is known for its offices of employers' and industrial organisations, as well as the traditional Restaurant Palace. During the renovation of the building, the restaurant's terrace was also renovated, and a stylish and functional solution was needed for the removal of rainwater.

Eteläranta 10, completed in 1952, is a prestigious building of Finnish business, Teollisuuskeskus, designed by architect Viljo Rewell. The Confederation of Finnish Industries and the Technology Industries of Finland are based there. In 2017, the building was restored in an extensive renovation. In connection with this, the Palace Restaurant, located on the 10th floor, was given a new look that respects the restaurant's roots.

Channel drains customised for the site are well suited for their purpose. When the need for change emerged at the end of the installation, Peltitarvike's expert quickly arrived at the site and solved the problem.

Channel drain according to the dimensions of the site

An important part of Restaurant Palace is its terrace, which has stunning views over the rooftops of Helsinki. Skanska Oy was responsible for the renovation of the terrace. The site needed a solution for the discreet removal of rainwater, in keeping with the style of the restaurant and the existing drainage system. The terrace was completed and commissioned in the summer of 2018.

Skanska's responsible site manager Eero Meriläinen says that the rainwater drainage solution for the restaurant terrace must be as flat as possible, so that the placement and movement of tables and chairs can be done smoothly. A flat terrace floor that remains as dry as possible is also safe for customers and staff.

The solution was an L-shaped channel drain, which is 50 meters long, tailored to the site by Peltitarvikke. The channel was adapted and compartmentalized according to the existing drainage. It is a rather low structure, as there was only a little space for the drain in the vertical direction. Rainwater is led from the channel drains to the terrace drains, which were connected to the existing drainage system. Some of the drain are located eccentrically in relation to the drain line, which brought its own challenges to the design and installation work.
