Well-designed fall protection reduces risks
Safe movement and working at heights starts with proper design. In new buildings, the design of fall protection is usually the responsibility of an architect or structural engineer. The design of fall protection must take into account, among other things, the structure, height and slope of the roof and the equipments located on the roof. When planning the placement of roof anchor points, the intended use of the anchor points and the size and shape of the building, roof and facade must be also taken into account.
The most recommended way to implement fall protection is a lifeline system that covers the entire roof, along which the number releases from lifeline system are kept to a minimum. In addition to the lifeline system, individual roof anchor points can be used in necessary places, such as at the entrances and exits and in the corners of the roofs. Roof safety products must withstand the load required for maintenance and repair work, in all weather conditions.
Properly dimensioned and selected roof safety products, taking into account the requirements of the property, guarantee a durable and safe fall protection solution that facilitates and speeds up roof maintenance and repair work.

Fall protection regulations in Finland
The minimum requirements for fall protection are defined by law. According to the Building Act 751/2023, the company undertaking the construction project must ensure that the building is designed and built in the manner required by its intended use, so that its use and maintenance are safe.
The requirements related to the safety of buildings are specified in more detail in the Ministry of the Environment Decree 1007/2017. According to the regulation, all areas requiring maintenance, inspections or upkeep of the building must have safe and easy uninterrupted access. Access to the roof and further to the fall protection system must also be safe.
According to the regulation, buildings over 9 metres high must be equipped with anchor points, such as roof anchor posts, for safety harnesses and for enabling maintenance of facades, unless another viable solution is planned for the maintenance of the facade.
