Finland's leading manufacturer of waterproofing products for 60 years
Founded in 1965, Peltitarvike Oy is now Finland's leading manufacturer of roof drains, channel drains and roof safety products. We have managed to maintain a strong market position from year to year as a subcontractor in the construction, HVAC and roofing industries, where it all started. In addition to success, however, our long history also includes difficult times, such as the recession in the 1990s. We have overcome these challenges thanks to the strong professionalism of our staff, which has built up the trust of our customers in the company's operations.
The strong professionalism of the staff has made it possible to provide comprehensive quality to customers, which has been at the heart of our operations since the beginning and continues to be so. Many customers have stayed with us from the 1970s to this day, which in part shows that we have also succeeded in our goal.

Peltitarvike - how it began
Seppo Toropainen, one of the founding members of the company, moved to Helsinki in the autumn of 1963. He worked in the metal industry in the sheet metal department of a machine shop. However, Toropainen and his partner had an idea about how the business should be managed and implemented. In February 1965, the decision was taken, and Toropainen resigned, deciding to work for himself.
From the beginning, the public company bore the name Peltitarvike, which described the company's product selection. Initially, the largest customer was Toropainen's former employer Levyputki Oy, which was a significant customer for several years even as the company expanded.

Waterproofing products for growth
Initially, production consisted of rain gutters, downpipes and accessories for their installation, components of air conditioning piping and, in part, installations of air conditioning. The biggest challenges in the early years were the acquisition of premises and equipment, recruitment of staff and product development to meet the expanding needs of customers. For product development, design and testing were carried out in-house, so expertise developed and remained under the control of the company.
The most significant step in development was the creation of waterproofing products for the construction and roofing industries. Bitumen melting and processing equipment, as well as other waterproofing supplies, played a major role in the company's growth.

A company supplying Finnair
In the early 1970s, the company form changed to a Oy and products made for the aircraft industry entered the product selection. For example, Peltitarvike developed handling and transport equipment as well as small aircraft parts for Finnair's catering needs. These product sectors set very strict quality criteria for production and design and this was of significant benefit to the development of quality control in the the company.
In 1989, a representation agreement was made to represent the roofing sector products of the German company Grün Gmbh in Finland. This was a very significant breakthrough in the construction market. The production of aluminium screens, which began in the 1970s, accounted for a significant proportion of turnover in the 1980s.

The recession is reflected in turnover
The most difficult times in the company's history were during the recession of the early 1990s. In 1993, turnover fell by approximately 30% compared with the previous financial year. The factory expansion completed in 1992 was still reflected in the costs. New customers were being sought more efficiently in the market.
During 1994, operations turned to growth with the help of products developed for the shipbuilding industry, such as special grilles. However, throughout the recession and afterwards, it was still possible to keep the entire staff employed. After the recession, the company's growth continued so strongly that at the turn of the millennium, a new factory was built in Tuusula, where the subsidiary Alupro Oy, which specialises in aluminium production, moved in early 2004.

Ownership changes with the generation change
The 2010s were preceded by the sale of the subsidiary Alupro in 2008. After the years following the financial crisis, the company began to climb towards its current success. At the same time in 2010, the ownership of the company was transferred to the current owners, the Bärlund brothers Tony, Tero and Kristian, with the generation change.

From metal workshop to machine production
The move to new premises in Vantaa in 2012 and the modernisation of the machinery transformed the previous metal workshop operations into mechanised production. A new fibre laser cutter was added to the CO2 laser cutter, which had been acquired a little earlier. In addition, the first pipe welding machine was acquired. The product design work done in the company also took a significant step forward thanks to modernised tools. In the early 2010s, Peltitarvike's product selection of stormwater drainage products expanded when the company began manufacturing channel drains. In 2013, the range was complemented by new PITOTM roof safety products.

Moving to the current premises
In 2016, Peltitarvike moved to its current modern premises in Kivikko, Helsinki. The change from the old premises was significant; an old and inefficient building was transformed totally into newly completed premises. The new premises were more energy efficient and designed from the beginning to meet the needs of Peltitarvike.

Peltitarvike is continuing its journey as a valued operator in the metal industry thanks to its high-quality products and professional service. The company's growth has continued steadily in recent years and operations have expanded, especially in the manufacture of channel drains and roof safety products. The 2022 turnover was the best in the company's history. A bold and customer-oriented attitude will enable development with new product solutions. The development of the company's operations is also increasingly driven by the desire to be a responsible operator in Finland. Peltitarvike's long history includes a wide range of stages, which we will celebrate during 2025 to mark our 60th anniversary.
