Fall protection for the roof of a sports hall

At the end of 2017, an international sports hall, the Kupittaa Ball Game Hall, was completed in the Kupitta district of Turku. To ensure the safety of maintenance work on the roof of the building, a lifeline system was installed.

Roof fall protection with lifeline system

The new sports hall was designed and built by Lemminkäinen Talo Oy. The assignment was to build a hall for different ball games, the arena of which can be divided into three training fields. The building has a 2,500-person auditorium and a 12.5-meter ceiling height required for international volleyball games. The ball hall is intended for basketball, floorball, volleyball, handball and gymnastics enthusiasts.

The fall protection of the roof was implemented using the 275-metre-long PITO™ Greenline lifeline system supplied by Peltitarvike. This allows people moving and working on the roof to connect the lanyard of their safety harness to the lifeline attached between the roof anchor posts, which increases both safety and comfort when working on the roof.

Flexible service from design to installation

Tero Lappi, the responsible site manager at Lemminkäinen Talo Oy, says that he has been working with Peltitarvikke for several years on the delivery of roof drains and other roof safety products. The first lifeline system was implemented for him in the Kupittaa Ball Game Hall, and the experience was good.

I delivered to Peltitarvikke the architect's roof drawing, the roof construction plans and the places where the roof should be accessible. On this basis, Peltitarvike made a preliminary plan, which we refined together so that the architect could finish the roof image.

Since there was a gap of about a year between the design and construction, the plan had to be slightly modified along the way and, for example, the number of roof anchor points had to be increased.

The wooden roof of the Kupittaa Ball Game Hall is flat. Lemminkäinen Talo eventually installed a total of 32 roof anchor points in place according to the plan, and they were used to attach fall protection equipment already during construction.
